St John’s Chapel - Why the scaffolding?

In August 2011 a crack started to open up above the window in the St John’s Chapel. This rapidly widened and other cracks appeared in the stonework. Outside the gap was even more obvious. Within weeks there was crack some 50mm wide and the ceiling of this Early English part of the Abbey was in danger of collapse.

Urgent action was required.

The stained glass window – The Clendon Dukes memorial which has the theme of “The Home at Bethany, Mary and Martha” made in 1879 by Lavers and Barraud -  was removed for safety and scaffolding erected to support the roof.

Outside excavations were carried out to try and find the cause and we are awaiting the Surveyor’s report and his proposals to rectify the situation.

Whatever the solution it is unlikely to be quick or cheap – our provisional budget is £60,000 – £100,000

Contributions  towards the cost of repairing the Parish Church of Pershore will be very welcome. See “How can I help?”.
